The Big Mind Map

The Big Mind Map

I believe that learning, education is about gaining insight into past/present knowledge but, also, about gaining confidence to use information in your own daily lives to achieve professional/personal goals and aims. I believe we seek understanding in order to develop a particular lifestyle that benefits ourselves as well as others. I believe that anything is an achievement even a degree or complete failure. We must, as individuals, see the good in any situation and capitalize on the knowledge.

Teaching Philosophy
How do I think learning occurs?

I believe that learning, education is about gaining insight into past/present knowledge but, also, about gaining confidence to use information in your own daily lives to achieve professional/personal goals and aims.  I believe we seek understanding to develop a particular lifestyle that benefits ourselves as well as others.  I believe that anything is an achievement, even a degree or complete failure.  We must, as individuals, see the good in any situation and capitalize on the knowledge.

How can I facilitate this process?  How have I come to these conclusions?
There have been several ways in which I have facilitated and understood this process.  One has been in the capacity of my professional career.  I have always relished the challenge of training others to be their best in their jobs.  I have met success and failure and must remember that this is a learning process for me as well.   I learn with each situation how to adapt to change and acquire the knowledge and skills to further myself and others.

Second, in my capacity as a student and educator, I have learned that the classroom is always unique.  Observing, listening, being able to adapt to the constant change of the environment is a must.  We are all individuals with distinctive personalities and learning is different for everyone.  Teaching is about service to the students, to the academic environment and to yourself; it is a fine balance.

Student Goals
What goals do I have for my students?
I want my students to be energized in their thinking.  The students will hopefully gain a better understanding of how to develop critical thinking, question change intelligently.  I would like to foster a more creative, innovative environment that helps students map out their own vision of goals and put them on the path to achieving them.  This would be accomplished through greater awareness of the learning process and ways of developing innovative strategies to tackle tough problems.  In their time at university, they will take a greater ownership of their learning and possibly accelerate the learning process.  The students will be able to enhance problem-solving skills through individual and group achievement.  And finally, I hope students will be able to take with them more life skills that allow for greater personal development and self-empowerment.

What do I do to implement my plans/intentions?
This is accomplished through the acquisition of important life skills. In the classroom, I have included the utilization of mind mapping, creative insight with visual mediums, journaling, and reflection in the course of teaching and understanding real world problems.  Where the use of projects and group work is warranted, it helps to take theory out of the incubator and apply in the real world.  Our culture must be more innovative, worldly, work dynamically, understand the importance of communication, recognize and appreciate change, and challenge convention intelligently.  I have come to understand that learning is a continuous aspect of our lives.  I remain open to other forms of teaching that spark this passion.
